Churchill School Students at the Bamboo Bike Studio

What better way to cap the spring semester? Four students from Manhattan’s Churchill School stopped by the Bamboo Bike Studio for a two-day course, culminating in building and riding a bamboo bike. Day one found students Ben Lyon and Christina Mailer-Nastasi assembling the bamboo frame, then packing and wrapping the joints:

The next day, Ben and Christina were joined by Jacob Federman and Konstantine Ouranitsas, and wheels, cranks, chains, handle bar, brakes and a seat were added to the nearly-completed frame:
Day 2- almost done!
With all the parts assembled, all that was left was a test ride… It was Ben’s birthday so he got dibs:

In just two days, and less than 10 hours, the students had built and ridden their own bike, with their own hands. “How is that possible, to do what we did?” Christina wondered. “It’s something you feel proud of, becuase you are actually putting it to use.”

Done with the bike, done with the class, stoked!

“Yeah,” said Ben, “it’s a huge sense of accomplishment— and, we got credit for it!” Amen.
